Ok...The root of investing is acquiring something to produce future income or or benefit. You acquire NOTHING when you gamble. There truly is a difference.

When you sink a coin in a slot machine, you are paying for a "chance" to win. That is not acquiring, that is not investing. You are not receiving income or benefit for your money. If you acquire shares of the casino, you are investing.

Webster (although it's an old version) goes as far in defining invest as to say "to put (money) into business, real estate, stocks, bonds, etc., for the purpose of obtaining an income or profit."
