<<< A previously unknown European competitor with 5,000 employees buys a large U.S. company in the same business ... >>>
1. It's 50,000 employees--not 5,000.
2. Siebe is not a competitor of TAVA's.
3. WNDR is not in the same business as Siebe (or TAVA).
From today's press release:
----------------- Siebe, based in Windsor, Berkshire, is one of Britain's largest diversified engineering and electronics groups, incorporating more than 200 companies and employing more than 50,000 people worldwide. The group designs and manufactures temperature and appliance controls, process automation and control systems, and industrial equipment. Leading subsidiaries of Siebe Control Systems include Foxboro, Barber-Colman, Triconex and APV. For the year ended April 5, 1997, Siebe reported revenues of more than 3 billion pounds (approximately US$4.95 billion). -------------------
Roughly speaking, it looks like Siebe makes "hardware", WNDR designs software for industrial automation, and TAVA--as a factory floor consulting firm--integrates hardware and software together, tailored to a particular company's needs. There's going to be a little overlap, but they are no more in the same business than are Dell, Microsoft, and Computer Associates.
