PG&E had many geothermal energy plants at the geysers in California but moved away from that type of electrical energy due to the geothermal steam having a significant amount of minerals dissolved in it. Steam was caustic and left deposits in equipment resulting in high maintenance costs.

Think of geysers in Yellowstone and other areas and the escaping steam leaves large amounts of mineral deposits wherever there is geothermal activity.
