If I flip a coin and it comes up heads three times in a row, he finds it extremely difficult to understand that the next coin flip's odds remain at 50/50.

That's funny. We had a couple of those types in my probability classes back in college. We practically had to chop up a pair of dice to show them that the dice didn't have any brains, and therefore didn't have any memory, and therefore couldn't remember that they had just come up 12 three times in a row, and thus that 12 was just as likely to come up a fourth time.
