Tropical Storms Reaching Further North

Here’s what’s driving the shift and why it matters:

  • Northward Migration of the Gulf Stream: Scientists have documented that the Gulf Stream has been shifting north by about 10 miles per decade since the 1980s. This current traditionally kept tropical storm energy concentrated in southern latitudes.

  • Warmer Coastal Waters Further North: As the Gulf Stream moves, it creates a corridor of warmer water along the Atlantic coast—especially noticeable along the Mid-Atlantic during hurricane season. Sea surface temperatures in this region are now 2–3°F higher than historical norms.

  • Impact on Tropical Storm Intensity: Normally, storms lose strength as they move north into cooler waters. But now, these warmer waters give storms extra fuel, allowing them to maintain dangerous intensity farther north than in the past.

?? It’s a clear sign that the dynamics of storm behavior are changing—potentially altering which regions need to be prepared for hurricane-level impacts. Fox Weather
