Ime prebuilt generally offers better value due to economies of scale but, depending on the system maker, you can be more pigeonholed in terms of future upgrade potential and flexibility. There's always tradeoffs in any system and the DIY segment of the PC market has always been small and likely dwindling.

I used to build a lot of boxes and occasionally still do but personally mostly use laptops for a while and a few years ago got into mini-PCs. Mostly AMD based but some Intel, they continue to amaze me with each new generation with how fast they've advanced and the performance provided in a little box. Not yet efficient for top level gaming or data intensive video editing (GPU) but for most everything else they're pretty impressive, imo. fwiw.
