The drugs enhance their performance. The short term is more important than the long term.

Its fairly common in most sports. It's a form of cheating.

while true, it continues to be inexplicable, there is an illogical disconnect between... short term benefit versus the extreme risk of drug use (be this long or short term)

.... long ago while in high school, i debated a bunch of rock'n-rollers about the use of drugs, (mostly marihuana, but there were others), i asked the question what is the benefit of drug use ? answer ? = it is like an adventure

-lol i responded you want to have an adventure ? you go and have a REAL LIFE adventure, take your pick, instead of self destroying yourself with this idiotic idea of "adventure"

for me the main point is the disconnect between high skill and simple logic of avoiding self destruction... i guess the term of being young (thinking one is immortal), and stupid (using drugs, with little use of critical thinking), is a good example of the expression.
