I agree that countless things are sold (not limited to those you list) that I do not want but obviously many others do. I am always amazed when I go to a pharmacy that the shelves are filled with products that I am convinced are useless, but obviously people buy them. Most people at least claim to believe things that to me are incredible, e.g. all religious myths. I don't understand why people want and believe the things they do, but it's clear that many don't think like me. A lot of human behaviour is conformity. Grow up in the US and you accept Christian dogma, grow up in Pakistan and you accept Islamic dogma, etc. Advertising is one of the cultural influences, certainly, but by no means the only one. And people do not need to be told to like sugar, it's innate, hence given almost unlimited access to sugar you get obesity. Advertising isn't needed to persuade people to consume alcohol.
I am very contrary - advertising makes me less likely to buy a product, because I dislike being told what to do.
