What are gain chips and why does Poet's new Blazar lasers need them?

In photonics, gain chips are a specific type of semiconductor optical device that act as the optical gain medium within lasers, especially in external cavity laser diodes (ECLs).

Think of the gain chip as the heart of the laser, responsible for amplifying light. Here's a closer look at what they are and how they function:

What is a Gain Chip?
  • Semiconductor-based: Gain chips are made from semiconductor materials, similar to laser diode chips.
  • Anti-reflective Coating: A key feature is a thick anti-reflective (AR) coating on one or both facets (ends). This coating minimizes or eliminates unwanted internal reflections within the chip, which helps prevent self-lasing and improves performance.
  • Part of an External Cavity: Gain chips are typically used in external cavity configurations, where a separate optical feedback mechanism, like a diffraction grating, is used to select and reflect the desired wavelength back into the chip for amplification.

How do Gain Chips Power Lasers?
  1. Optical Gain: The gain chip's semiconductor material has properties that allow it to amplify light through stimulated emission.
  2. External Cavity Feedback: Instead of relying on the reflections from the facets of the chip itself to create a laser cavity, the gain chip is coupled with an external element, such as a diffraction grating. This grating acts as a mirror that reflects a specific wavelength back into the gain chip.
  3. Wavelength Selection: By rotating the diffraction grating, the reflected wavelength can be tuned, making the laser tunable.
  4. Light Amplification and Oscillation: The light is amplified within the gain chip and reflects back and forth between the external feedback element and the chip's facet, creating a resonant cavity and resulting in laser oscillation at the selected wavelength.

Applications of Gain Chips:
  • Tunable Laser Sources (TLS): Gain chips are vital components in tunable lasers, allowing for the precise selection and tuning of the laser's output wavelength.
  • External Cavity Diode Lasers (ECDL): They form the gain medium for ECDLs, offering advantages like a broader tuning range and a narrower linewidth compared to traditional laser diodes.
  • Silicon Photonics: In silicon photonics, gain chips, specifically Reflective SOAs (RSOAs), are used as the gain medium for integrated tunable light sources in high-speed optical communication systems.

In essence, gain chips are engineered semiconductor components that provide the necessary amplification and allow for wavelength tuning in various advanced laser systems.
