Hung

I remember Hung as being a critical darling when it first came out in 2009, then it sort of disappeared, so I decided to finally get around to see what the fuss was about.

The concept appears to be a home run. The central figure is a high school baseball star turned coach back at his old school accidentally becoming an escort, assisted by living up to the title of the show. The casting of Thomas Jane in the lead role, plus Anne Heche as his ex-wife essentially still stuck in the days when she was the queen of that high school, plus Jane Adams as the most unlikely and neurotic of pimps, matches the actors perfectly to their roles. Obviously there are not only many issues to be explored and countless comedic set-ups, and for the first season and into the second, Hung appears to be delivering on that promise, but into the third season it really does just peter out.

The problem is that the show, even though it would seem to have had free reign as it was made by HBO, never really has the courage of its convictions to truly dive into contradictions enmeshing the various characters. There is still plenty to enjoy and lots of laughs, but overall I would call Hung a wasted opportunity.
