J,

<<Do you think that one-stop FC shopping is critical and will drive more M and A activity?>>

Your comment seems almost prescient in regards to todays headline in the Vixel announcement . I guess great minds think alike !

I think the Adeptec & Symbios deal is more of an opportunistic capture on the part of ADPT given the current financial situation in Korea. I have a feeling that Vixel recognized that if they want to be in the switch biz the time is now and that Arcxel offered the best and cheapest way to leverage that opportunity. Given the importance of their hub customer base it makes sense to offer an upgrade path. I also believe there may be some significant barriers to entry to start a FC switch development program from scratch at this point. Ancor has been at it from at least 1994, and Brocade was founded in 95. The time to market [at least for storage apps] seems to be now.

It is also interesting that Arcxel's AGS/8 is an 8 port switch featuring FC class 1,2,3 and intermix. They also have a distribution agreement with Hucom. I wonder if Vixel has any interest in the Lan applications that Ancor has traditionally addressed ? I am also curious if the Galileo referred to in the EETimes article is a new generation switch or a nifty new name for the ASG/8.

Neil
