By Kelly Cloonan

NXP Semiconductors expects revenue to continue to decline in its third quarter, though at a slower clip, as profit dropped in its latest period.

The Netherlands semiconductor company on Monday guided for sales of $3.05 billion to $3.25 billion for the third quarter, the midpoint of which is 3% lower than the year-ago period. Analysts polled by Factset were looking for $3.08 billion.

The company expects third-quarter earnings per share of $2.22 to $2.62, down from $2.79 a year prior.

Chief Executive Kurt Sievers said the outlook reflects in part an emerging improvement in the company's core end markets.

For the second quarter, the company posted a profit of $445 million, or $1.75 a share, compared with $658 million, or $2.54 a share, a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings were $2.72, ahead of estimates of $2.68 a share according to analysts.

Revenue fell 6%, to $2.93 billion. Analysts expected $2.9 billion.

Shares slipped 4.6%, to $217.70, in after-hours trading.
