WinStar Places Initial Order For 38 GHz Radios With SNMP Interface With Digital Microwave Corporation
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1998--Digital Microwave Corporation (NASDAQ:DMIC - news) today announced that it has received contracts valued at $2.8 million from WinStar Communications, Inc., a competitive local exchange carrier using leading edge wireless technology advancements for a competitive advantage.

The order is for SPECTRUM II and other digital microwave radios in varying capacities and in frequencies of 18, 23 and 38 GHz. Shipments are expected to begin during the first quarter of fiscal 1999. These orders were placed as part of a three-year purchase agreement announced in September 1997. Cumulative orders-to-date with WinStar since the signing of the agreement are $4.6 million.

The point-to-point digital microwave radios contain an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) interface. SNMP is a standards-based protocol that has begun to replace proprietary protocols for telecommunications network management. It is designed to facilitate the exchange of management information between network devices, allowing network administrators to manage network performance more easily.

The SNMP interface was developed by Digital Microwave Corporation in cooperation with WinStar, the largest holder of licenses for 38 GHz spectrum in the country. Digital Microwave Corporation and WinStar are also cooperatively working on high-speed, higher capacity OC-3 (155 Mbps) wireless access systems.

Nathan Kantor, president and chief operating officer of WinStar, said, ''We are in a period of unprecedented growth. Adding customers, launching new services, and expanding market coverage across the U.S. creates a potential demand for thousands of radios. We have found Digital Microwave Corporation to be very responsive to our needs. Their global leadership in the microwave and millimeter wave wireless market makes them a strong partner.''

Charles D. Kissner, Digital Microwave Corporation chairman and chief executive officer, said, ''We appreciate the opportunity to respond to WinStar's product requirements with market-driven developments such as the SNMP interface. We are confident that our commitment to product innovation and customer satisfaction will continue to support WinStar's growth in the deregulated U.S. telecommunications market.''

WinStar Communications, Inc. is a national local communications company serving business customers, long distance carriers, fiber-based competitive access providers, mobile communications companies, local telephone companies, and other customers with broadband local communications needs.
