Batteries are not an energy source like coal.
Batteries are problem solvers by smoothing out peak demand. They can not only provide backup power, they provide the extra power needed to get through daily peaks without having to run additional generators. Battery systems are stabilizers for the system, and countries, states, and localities are getting the picture: If you're having outages, battery systems are often the key to solving problems.

Tesla is currently building another gigafactory near where I live which will build more battery systems. Batteries are now key element the power system.

Recently, Puerto Rico -- known for the worst power mess imaginable. Recently, they started installing "PowerWalls" in homes and businesses that collect excess power off the grid and can be used to reduce demand on the grid during peak periods. This is far less expensive than building and using "peaker" plants just to cover short periods (maybe 2 hours) of a day. At the same time, if the building where the battery is located loses power the battery can keep it running for hours like a standby generator would.

I would not dis battery systems: These are what will ultimately eliminate essentially all outages.
