California Lawsuit Against Tesla Could Ban Car Sales By Tara Hurlin July 29, 2025 Updated
Tesla is in hot water again, this time with the state of California, the automaker’s most important market. If the California lawsuit doesn’t go Tesla’s way, the automaker could lose the privilege of selling its cars in the state via a 30-day stop sale suspension.
This all began when the California Department of Motor Vehicles sued Tesla back in 2022, alleging that the company engaged in false advertising by misleadingly promoting its vehicles as having advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) that offered full autonomy, specifically the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features. The DMV argued that Tesla’s marketing materials strongly suggested that its vehicles could operate autonomously without the need for human monitoring, when in reality, the systems required constant driver supervision and were not capable of true self-driving.
An official at the DMV wrote in the complaint that “vehicles equipped with those ADAS features could not, at the time of those advertisements, and cannot now, operate as autonomous vehicles.”
California is now seeking to suspend Tesla’s ability to sell cars in the Sunshine State for at least 30 days, along with seeking monetary damages for consumers...
