How to Stay Safe When the Big One Comes Move away from the area before it happens. I'm seriously thinking about it. Don't want to be here when it does.. I currently live about 2 miles inland from Puget Sound, north of Seattle. High enough in elevation to escape a tsunami, but not the catastrophic effects of the big quake's aftermath. As those articles make clear, the infrastructure and economies of OR and WA and southwest BC will be devastated for years. Can't easily just up and leave afterwards, either, as highways and bridges will be down and escape routes impassable.
