Tesla launches taxis without the robo Tesla ride-hailing rolls out in Bay AreaTesla announced that riders can now ride-hail one of its vehicles in the Bay Area, in addition to in Austin, Texas. However, California has not permitted Tesla to offer robotaxi service, as it is offering in Austin, so the service will be more akin to calling up a regular Uber or Lyft ride. The limited rollout highlights the regulatory hurdles Tesla faces as it looks to pivot to robotaxis — the California Public Utilities Commission declared last week that Tesla was not allowed to test or transport the public with or without a driver in a self-driving vehicle.
