So much for the dumb cow's Oath of Office...

Every member of Congress swears to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” That implies that your primary identity and loyalty, in an official capacity, must be American.

Publicly declaring that you identify as Guatemalan first sounds like placing another country ahead of the one you’re duty-bound to serve.
Elected officials are supposed to speak in ways that unite the country.

She made the comment in Mexico City, speaking in Spanish, to an audience outside the U.S.

That context makes it sound less like cultural pride and more like a declaration of allegiance to a foreign identity, especially when addressing non-U.S. audiences about political matters.

The issue here isn’t about being proud of heritage, but about the order of loyalty publicly expressed by a sitting U.S. Representative.
