U.S. firms head list of six new Irish operations
DUBLIN, Feb 24 (Reuters) - U.S. retail banking firm MBNA Corp (KRB - news) and U.S. healthcare group Stryker Corp (SYK - news) have agreed to set up new operations in Ireland, Deputy Prime Minister Mary Harney said on Tuesday.
The two projects were on a list of six that she said would create 800 posts in manufacturing, software development and teleservices in Dublin and in the southern county of Cork.
Stryker Corp completed a 13.4 million Irish pound investment proposal to make orthopaedic implants and to cut accessories for powered surgical instruments in Cork, a move that would create 290 positions.
MBNA, the world's biggest independent credit card lender, would set up a new call centre in central Dublin, creating 200 new jobs, the statement said.
''Overall, the strength and competitiveness of the economy continues to be a major magnet for foreign investment. International services companies are still a major focus of attention,'' she said.
The projects were all backed by Ireland's IDA development group, which receives structural funds from the European Union to help pay for employment and training, she said.
JetForm Corp (FORMF - news), a Canadian software developer, would set up a pan-European consulting and technical support centre in Dublin, creating 100 jobs.
Information and entertainment outfit ITT Sheraton Corp (ITT - news) would expand its call centre to add 90 jobs, a move that, ''considerably enhances the strategic significance of the Cork operation.''
Mobile data communications company Option International NV (OPIN.ED) of Belgium would create 28 jobs by setting up a production engineering operation.
And Delta Dental Plan, a U.S. dental insurance provider, would create 100 new software jobs designed to develop, implement and provide technical support for computer systems, the statement said.
