The Financial Post reports in its Saturday, Aug. 9, edition that Canada is working to rebuild its relationship with Mexico amid threats from President Donald Trump about new tariffs ahead of a review of the North American free-trade agreement. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Prime Minister Mark Carney sent key officials to Mexico City to meet with President Claudia Sheinbaum and business leaders. Mr. Trump recently increased tariffs to 35 per cent on Canadian goods not in compliance with the agreement, while Mexico received a 90-day reprieve as negotiations continue. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand emphasized the urgency of strengthening bilateral ties, mentioning discussions with Mexican officials and industry representatives during her visit. On the business side, their talks included representatives from Canadian Pacific Kansas City, TC Energy and pension giant Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec. During the meetings, both sides explored how Canadian companies and capital investors can help build infrastructure in Mexico that facilitates bilateral trade, including ports and rail. Strengthening energy security, including conventional and renewable power, was also discussed.
