I agree with your son that a modem operating at 28kbps -- or even at 56kbps -- is not a convenient distribution channel. But the chip-based Wave system will work with any distribution channel -- CD, DVD, satellite, or emerging broadband, and will not require that the user be online (except occasionally, to square accounts).
