His immigration policy was the number one reason people voted for him.
And look where he is now with regards to immigration:

Only 43% of U.S. adults said they approved of his handling of immigration, down slightly from the 49% who supported his work on the issue back in March.
This decline will only continue as Trump's ICE-IS thugs continue to detain more and more legal residents, including U.S. citizens. All while falling far short of his goals to deport one million illegals per year.

The only reason why Trump still enjoys the support of 40% of the population is because he has convinced that 40% that "doing something" is preferable to "doing nothing," even if "doing something" means turning the country into absolute shit.
