I lived in the DC area 1983-1989. Lived in Northern Virginia and worked in DC, first right on Lafayette Square, kitty corner from the White House, then at the old Star Newspaper building, right across from the Old Post Office, which later became the Trump Plaza hotel. Then, ultimately in the Portrait Gallery area.

Really did not encounter much crime, though we had a purse snatching one night in front of our Virginia townhouse.

A guy I worked with was mugged one night in DC. A big guy put his arms around him and lifted him off the ground as the other guy went through his pockets.

The only other incident was when a friend and co-worker was coming up the escalator at the Archives station on his way to work. A kid about 13 came up to him and said, “Man, I’m going to steal you.” My friend said “you’re going to steal me?” The kid says, “yeah,I’m gonna steal you.” My friend says, “you mean you’re going to rob me?” Kid says, “yeah, I’m goin’ rob you.” My buddy laughed in his face and walked away. Poor kid didn’t know what to say or so.

That’s about the sum total of my experience there. But then that was 40 years ago.
