Its also tough to trade options in the Canadian market because it lacks liquidity. It is extremely difficult to get in or out and the spreads tend to be larger than in the U.S. market. This also tends to allow the market maker to move the bid without necessarily any move in the price in the underlying stock. In addition, it is very difficult to make money without taking some counter position to protect yourself. I have dappled in options or puts with no protection and got creamed. I have made money on paper by plotting various strategies for a period of time but have never had the guts to actually take the position because I believe you would require some staying power and I am not willing to risk the sort of money that would, in my view be necessary to do this. However, all of these strategies normally involved reducing the risk in some manner by purchasing insurance of some sort. Good luck to you Dan if you wish to try.
