Japan buys very little from the US in the consumer goods category. Most of what consumers buy there are locally made or sourced nearby in Asia. US consumer goods are not competitive in Japan for the most part.

Japan does buy some raw materials and capital goods, but those costs can be spread out over years and large production runs. They export about twice as much to the US as they import.

If you are buying spacecraft, MRI machines, nuclear reactors, and things like that, yes, you probably paid a smidge more in tariffs this past quarter in Japan. That will all likely be refunded in 2026.
