that was the dumbest war ever, most European countries had treaties with each to defend each other if they were attacked. when Britain declared war all the commonwealth countries were automatically at war. The USA came late into the war. The USA entered World War I primarily due to Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare, which led to the sinking of American merchant ships, and the interception of the Zimmermann Telegram, in which Germany proposed a military alliance with Mexico against the US. These events shifted public opinion and prompted President Wilson to ask Congress for a declaration of war on April 6, 1917.
