I think IBM does advance semi node fabrication more for research than commercial production, and I think they decided to de-emphasize being a merchant fab many many years ago.

To my knowledge the only major merchant fabrication players in the uber advanced nodes (lets say 5nm and below) are TSMC, Intel (lagging behind), Samsung (lagging behind) and ...... that's all that comes to mind.

I think the reason TSMC is able to charge exorbitant rates for 2nm fabrication is they're the only one that can do it at any scale, and the demand exceeds their capacity, so prices are through the roof. The normal story is that by the time the other wannabe leading edge players have caught up to where TSMC is today, TSMC will be starting to sell the next advanced node.

Hmmm, but once they get to 1nm, well, you can't go below that, can ya!??

Complex stuff. I can't say I understand it in any depth.
