Extreme Temperature Diary- Friday August 22nd, 2025/ Main Topic: Cool Fall-Like Relief Coming for the U.S. – Guy On Climate
Dear Diary. We will see the start of meteorological fall on September 1st, so most of this summer is behind us. Summer 2025 is noteworthy due to extreme heat occurring just about everywhere for at least one week out of the season and flooding across many areas east of the Rockies. The good news today is that a weather pattern change will usher in dry and cooler than average conditions for the eastern half of the country:
 Dry air should drive all the way to the Gulf Coast, so water-logged residents across most of the East should get needed relief.
Even the West, which is currently in the throes of major CAT3 Heatwave Pemex will cool late this week. Will the heat dome there come down enough to kill Pemex? Stay tuned.
Also, as a bonus the cool trough dropping southward from Canada will protect the eastern seaboard from any developing hurricanes. Currently meteorological models don’t forecast a hurricane moving into the U.S. well into September.
Forecast minimum temperatures going into Labor Day weekend will be downright chilly for many from the Midwest into the East:
 Given the current state of climate change, we are due for a spate of weather leading to several hundred record low temperatures after many months of more record max and min than cold records being produced from an overheated atmosphere because of our carbon pollution. Of course, I’ll report how all of this good news pans out on this blog.
Here are more “ET’s” recorded from around the planet the last couple of days, their consequences, and some extreme temperature outlooks, as well as any extreme precipitation reports:
I'm delighted today to announce we're launching the Global Burden of Climate Change Study, an international team effort to standardize estimates of present day death, disability, and illness due to climate change. @chelseaeharvey.bsky.social with the scoop: subscriber.politicopro.com/article/eene... — Colin Carlson (@colincarlson.bsky.social) 2025-08-22T17:25:34.921Z

Increasingly, glacier retreat, warm temperatures and recreation don't mix. As for that infamous Trump administration DOE "climate report" that Judith Curry recently co-authored, here are some assessments from the experts

As Erin heads out to sea, a new disturbance (90L) appears poised to develop in its wake and threaten Bermuda on Monday. The latest from @bhensonweather.bsky.social and I;

Look at the sea surface temps in Erin’s wake - dropped 5 degrees F!!
As a result of all the heat energy Erin burned, it’s accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) is already at 30 Units, headed for 36+, likely beating the total energy of the entire 2013 hurricane season!
Happy to say goodbye now to Erin. — Jeff Berardelli (@weatherprof.bsky.social) 2025-08-21T23:07:42.279Z
Is it true that solar and wind power make electricity bills skyrocket?
@hannahritchie.bsky.social shows with US data that having lots of solar+wind doesn’t lead to more expensive power. Nor does the absence of solar and wind guarantee that your power will be cheap. — Jan Rosenow (@janrosenow.bsky.social) 2025-08-22T13:48:15.790Z
