My father-in-law was adjacent to the battle of the bulge. He was in an aircraft repair crew in France. They pop-riveted patches on holes in airplanes returning from bombing raids. When the battle of the bulge began, the army grabbed everyone they could find to send to the front. They took his whole crew. When they processed him they noticed that he weighed only 100 lbs and was ultra skinny. They asked him how he ever got put into the military in the first place. That was his normal build. They trained him for a couple of hours about shooting a 50cal. anti-aircraft gun and left him to defend the airfield. He told me that none, not a one, of his plane repair crewmates ever came back.
