"Shower on him every blessing, drown him in a sea of happiness, give him economic prosperity such that he should have nothing else to do but sleep, eat cakes, and busy himself with the continuation of the species, and even then, out of sheer ingratitude, sheer spite, man would play you some nasty trick." That's so good!
Adam and Eve had 99.99% free use of Paradise, but that wasn't quite good enough for them, nor for us, their descendants.
Nothing is as needed for the soul as contentment.
The famous "Woman at the Well" in John's Gospel is a perfect example of discontentment: Been through five husbands, now just shacked up with number six. If Jesus hadn't stopped by, she'd be soon with the 7th.
But Jesus offers her living water something he says quenches thirst forever. She's thrilled at the idea, but it's the thirst in her soul she's vainly drowning with men that he is talking about. This water's main quality is that no one who drinks of it will ever thirst again. This means the water, which is actually the Holy Spirit, contents the soul forever. |
