To mark the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II, China is holding a large military parade in the capital. Hundreds of tanks, missiles and fighter jets are said to be on display. In addition to Kremlin chief Putin, North Korea's dictator Kim is also expected.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will take part in a large military parade in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II. This was announced by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. A total of 26 foreign heads of state and government would be present at the parade, Deputy Foreign Minister Hong Lei said at a press conference. Among them are Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Iranian President Massoud Peseshkian, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and South Korean Parliament Speaker Woo Won-shik.

Kim Jong Un's trips abroad are extremely rare. In the past six years, the dictator has left North Korea's borders only once, in September 2023 for a summit with Putin. Kim made his last visit to China in January 2019, when he met President Xi Jinping for talks in Beijing's Great Hall of the People.

The Victory Day parade on September 3 is intended to demonstrate China's growing military strength and diplomatic solidarity between China, Russia and the Global South. Xi will take part in the parade of tens of thousands of soldiers on Tiananmen Square on that day alongside foreign dignitaries and the Chinese leadership.

China also wants to show previously secret equipment
A total of 45 formations are to run or fly across the square. As Wu Zeke of the Central Military Commission in Beijing said last week, these include selected units of the army, navy, air force, but also air defense troops. In addition, the state leadership wants to display hundreds of tanks and military vehicles as well as fighter jets and helicopters in the 70-minute demonstration.

Photos of military vehicles on Beijing's streets with missiles or unmanned underwater systems were already circulating on the Internet. For some time now, units have been training for the parade on the outskirts of the city in the summer heat. According to Wu, all weapon systems on display will be Chinese-made. Among them is said to be new, previously unseen equipment. Wu named, among other things, drones, electronic jamming systems, hypersonic weapons as well as missile and air defense systems.

The parade comes at a time when Beijing is building up increasing military pressure in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait under Western criticism. After 2015 on the 70th anniversary, the People's Republic is holding a military parade this year for the second time to commemorate the victory over Japan in World War II. The last major military parade in Beijing took place in 2019. At that time, the ruling Communist Party commemorated the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic in 1949.
