...it would make it clear to Belarus that they ought not have done what they did

..............................................................................

Yes, a significant part of the original Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022 originated from Belarus.

Here's a breakdown of Belarus's role:

  • Staging Ground: Belarus, a close ally of Russia, allowed the Russian Armed Forces to use its territory as a staging ground for the invasion. This included allowing Russian troops to perform military drills on Belarusian soil in the weeks leading up to the offensive and then not having them exit as scheduled.

  • Northern Front: The use of Belarus's territory gave Russia a direct and short land route to Ukraine's capital, Kyiv. Russian forces launched an attack from the north, crossing the border into Ukraine from Belarus in an attempt to capture the capital.

  • Missile and Air Attacks: Belarus also permitted Russia to use its military airbases and installations to fire missiles and artillery at Ukrainian targets.

  • No Direct Troop Involvement (at the outset): While Belarus provided logistical support and allowed its territory to be used for the attack, the Belarusian military itself did not directly participate in the initial invasion. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly stated that he would not send his country's soldiers into the conflict unless they were attacked first.

The use of Belarus as a launchpad for the invasion was widely condemned by Western countries, leading to sanctions against Belarus.
