Unlike consumer goods, farm commodity prices are market-based, not input cost based. That means even as a farmer's cost of production increases due to input costs, they are still only able to sell at the prices set by the markets, many of which are global.

As if a wheat farmer in North Dakota doesn't have enough to worry about with respect to wheat prices in Argentina, Ukraine, and Russia, they also have to be concerned about the whims of someone who can snap their fingers and increase their cost for fertilizer 25% through a social media post.
