The administration has already lined up alternatives for when the tariffs are thrown out in court.

The Section 232 tariffs now include appliances:

This is in addition to the 300-categories added in the end of March:

All imported furniture will have 50% tariffs on them in less than 50 days.

President Trump announced on August 22, 2025, that he is initiating a "major tariff investigation" on furniture imports into the United States, with tariffs to be determined within the next 50 days. This announcement is tied to a broader investigation into timber, lumber, and wood products that was launched in March and is being conducted under Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act by the Commerce Department

The administration is going after large categories of products under Section 232. This is their strategy to get around the appeals courts upholding the CIT ruling on reciprocal tariffs in the end of May that said they were all illegal.

The administration is hitting durable goods and other blind items first. Since these products are bought infrequently, it is thought that consumers are less likely to notice big bumps in price. I disagree, but the administration also believes that foreign companies pay our tariffs, so there is all kinds of cognitive dissonance going on.

This game will continue until consumers have had enough and start pushing back at the point of sale and the polling places.
