Government gouges you at the pumps

You know governments are gouging you. But do you know just how bad you’re getting gouged every time you go to the gas station?

Well, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation just released our 27th annual Gas Tax Honesty Report that shows all the hidden taxes you pay when you fuel up.

You’re paying provincial fuel taxes. You’re paying federal fuel taxes. You’re also paying a hidden carbon tax the government buried in fuel regulations. In some cities, you’re also paying a transit tax when you fuel up.

Then there’s sneaky tax-on-tax. Yup, governments tax your fuel then calculate sales taxes after all the per-litre taxes are added.

All told, taxes cost you about 42 cents per litre of gas on average. If you fuel up a minivan once every week, you’ll pay about $1,650 in gas taxes this year.

At least all the potholes are fixed! (oops, just kidding).

There is some good news though.

Taxfighters like you hammered the Liberal government in Ottawa so hard, you forced those politicians to eliminate their favourite tax: the consumer carbon tax applied on fuels like gasoline, diesel and natural gas.

Let’s be honest, we all know those politicians wanted to keep carbon taxing you harder every year.

But because of your unrelenting pressure, those politicians knew they had to end the consumer-facing carbon tax if they wanted to keep their six-figure taxpayer-funded pay cheques.

Ending the consumer carbon tax saved you about 18 cents per litre in taxes at the pumps.

Here’s the bad news: Prime Minister Mark Carney didn’t scrap all carbon taxes.

Carney kept the hidden carbon tax the government buried in fuel regulations. This hidden carbon tax will add up to 17 cents per litre of gas by 2030, when the regulations are fully implemented, and drain up to $1,100 a year from the average household. And nope — no rebates this time.

Carney is also imposing another hidden carbon tax on Canadian businesses. That’s on top of the carbon tax buried in the fuel regulations.

Carney wants you to think only businesses will pay the cost of his carbon tax.

Unfortunately for Carney, taxfighters are NOT stupid.

Just nine per cent of Canadians believe Carney that businesses will pay most of the costs of his carbon tax, according to a Leger poll commissioned by the CTF. Meanwhile, 70 per cent of Canadians say businesses will pass most or some of those costs to you through higher prices.

We hope you will keep fighting with us until ALL carbon taxes are completely scrapped.

CBC milks taxpayer cashflow to attend exclusive awards shows

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation blew through $93,058 of your money to nominate itself and attend an exclusive award show over the last five years.

The Radio Television Digital News Association holds an annual awards gala for regional and national media organizations.

The catch? Outlets must pay a fee of $95 to $190, depending on the category, to become a nominee.

We found the state broadcaster spent $54,390 on entry fees for the awards and $38,668 on travel costs and attendance. And of course, you paid the bill.

A total of 65 per cent of the national nominees are from the CBC this year — and 72 per cent of the prairie nominees are from the CBC.

To make matters even worse, the CBC was a platinum sponsor for the gala in 2024. The top sponsorship for this year’s gala costs $15,000.

The only award the CBC deserves is a big golden pig trophy for wasting tax dollars.

Video: Poilievre demands Carney scrap ALL carbon taxes. Poilievre is right to keep fighting!

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre says he will keep fighting to scrap ALL carbon taxes and that’s great news.

CTF’s Federal Director Franco Terrazzano and Alberta Director Kris Sims break down where the fight against carbon taxes is heading next and what it means for your wallet. You can watch (and share) the YouTube video by clicking the link below.

Here’s the gas tax answers

If you’re driving in Vancouver, we’ve got bad news for you: Politicians are ripping you off.

Taxes cost 63 cents per litre of gas in Vancouver, which is the highest in Canada. That’s about 40 per cent of the total pump price!

If you’re driving through Manitoba, then you should fuel up before leaving. Manitoba has the lowest gas taxes in Canada, costing 29 cents per litre.
