didn't have many toys, meals out and vacations to a place we paid for rooms were extremely rare

Of these three things the only one kids care about is toys, and even then it's not volume, but that they have some.

The monetary things adults are about are not terribly important to kids, until they go through puberty, hit the early teens, and if they're in the wrong group they start to realize other people have stuff that they don't. Even then, as long as life is improving modestly each year, they're happy.

In wealth as it relates to happiness, the key issue is whether you are moving up, even slowly, and not the level you are on at the moment. Someone with $100 million in the bank and then has a disaster and moves down to $5 million in the bank is much less happy than someone who makes $28k per year and gets a raise to $32k (this person is ecstatic).
