Who Wants to Beat Windows?
...Now development efforts have shifted, not because Java has failed as a competitor to Windows and a foundation for client-side apps, but because the technology has matured and is so well suited to the new network computing model. Client-side applets alone won't cut it for enterprise needs. But Java on the server side can produce Web-enabled legacy systems, secure access to multiple databases, and end-to-end transaction processes. We don't need to beat Windows for this.
