I was lucky to have some good high school teachers who helped me decide what to do. I learned to program in a special one-person class to get ready for engineering school at UC after I decided to go into electrical engineering rather than be an architect. Both department heads were extremely helpful letting me change my independent study mechanical drawing class to an advanced math class of one person to learn to use the computer.
