When I went to university, our dorm quad paid for the full pay TV cable. We had all the channels: HBO, ESPN, and all the others that I cannot remember their names now. It was a big hook for me and I ended up binge watching like crazy.

When I moved out of the dorm into a shared rental house, nobody was willing to put up the upfront cost and commitment of a cable. It was cold turkey. For the first few days we all sat in a baren living room having nothing to do. It felt very weird.

Then things changed. A couple of guys knew how to play guitar and keyboard. They started playing. We all got better acquainted with each other had started talking. Some of us even began to cook with each other, which was a big deal for those of who had never seen uncooked meat and had depended on their moms to cook and deliver food.

Not having a TV proved to be a very happy experience.

I never bought a TV or subscribed to cable until well after I was married and my mother in law was going to spend her summer vacation with us.

Even today, I never channel surf and don't subscribe to cable TV. We do have Netflix and Disney (mostly for the kids), but nobody spends time channel flipping. Even our kids prefer to read books or chat online with their friends than to watch TV.
