...For this and other actions, Patterson was eligible for censure—which, under new party rules, could bar him from appearing on the 2026 primary ballot. In the lead-up to the vote, Patterson worked behind the scenes to rally against the proposal, threatening lawsuits against anyone who voted to censure him and warning that the effort was part of a broader push by “weirdos” and far-right billionaires to purge the party of dissenters.

“We ought to be growing the party and celebrating the great successes that we had this session, talking about what we need to do differently next session,” he said in a phone call with a Denton County precinct chair last month, audio of which was leaked to the right-wing website Current Revolt. “But there is a hostile takeover by these lunatics who are in charge.”
It didn’t matter. The resolution to censure passed, and it now heads to the Texas GOP’s executive committee for final review.
