My own remedy - let lack of sleep become your best friend, your boon companion. It's gonna be with you for a while, might as well be on good terms with it...

<<When a month-old just won't stop crying when you pit her down,
what to do?>>

Rock her. Hope you had the foresight to buy a big ol' rocking chair with lotsa room around the armrest. Put on music for her - recommend something you like, as well. For our oldest, we used Wee Sing tapes and hammer dulcimer recordings - very soothing. Raffi is nice, too. Make up a series of classical tapes including Brahms, Bach, and Mozart at their most relaxing.

And make sure something hasn't been overlooked - hunger, dupa mice, fever, burps. Katie was burpmeister deluxe - usually good for at least two. SOme of my fondest memories of our kids are those nights when we'd fall asleep together in that rocker after a struggle with Mr. Sandman (no, not the NJ Nixon supporter - too scary).
