If the great American journalist H.L. Mencken could interview Donald Trump, it might sound like this:
Question: "How do you put together such a loyal base Mr. Trump?"
Answer: "Mencken, I keep my base alarmed by an endless series of imaginary hobgoblins. My base clamors to be led to safety. They are un-inquisitive and gulp slogans and ready-made ideas. They admire most extravagantly, the most daring liars; my base detests most violently those who try to tell them the factual, empirical, evidentiary truth.
"My base knows what they want and deserve to get it good and hard, so I use half-truth, oversimplification, weasel words and lies. I keep it simple — I tell my base that we are here! It is now! Science, and all human knowledge is bunk! I tell them we can go back to a simpler, happier time. I sell them magical wrinkle cream for all that is wrong with their lives. They believe me. Giving my base the vote has no more made them wise and free than Christianity has made them good. So much for the collective wisdom of individual ignorance."
Q: "Mr. Trump do you have contempt for your base?"
.A: "Mr. Mencken, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people, and last November my base reached their heart's desire at last and the White House is now adorned by a downright moron, me, Donald Trump. I have contempt for everything and everybody that put me there, and I am accountable to no one." |
