Detective Suprenant
The Last Captains

I have always been fascinated by the Magdalen Islands aka Iles de la Madelaine, a group of islands in the Gilf of St. Larence that are essentially the bits of a large sand dune that sticks out of the ocean. Their isolation has created a unique culture, with most of the older building constructed from lumber salvaged from shipwrecks and many of the inhabitants descended from shipwreck survivors who stayed.

The closest I got to visiting the islands is when I rode a bike around nearby Prince Edward Island in the 1990s. Usually I came make some sense out of French being spoken, but the extreme accent I heard around the eastern end of PEI was impenetrable, much like some of the accents you hear in the drama Detective Suprenant and in the documentary series The Last Captians.

The eponymous Detective Suprenant was exiled from Quebec City to the remote Magdalens after he turned in some colleagues for corruption. Now he has settled in well on the islands but when he has to investigate the murder of a teenage girl, it turns intoa case which grows to involve many locals and many secrets. To complicate matters, a former colleague who is hostile to Suprenant is sent in to supervise the investigation. Unfortunately that particular outsider is a bit of a cartoon villain, but there is enough interesting stuff going on that I was able to overlook that. In the end Detective Suprenant delivers a satisfying six episodes. If another season appears I will definitely watch it. (I will confess that at times it was hard to keep all the similar looking bearded men distinct in my mind.)

But one thing Detective Suprenant does not deliver is a thoroughgoing portrait of the Magdalen Islands. You can get a lot closer to that by watching the documentary series The Last Captains. It profiles a number of the remaining fishers in the Magdalens as they go about the life and work, and we are able to pick up a good understanding of the archipelago’s history and culture along the way. Yes, there were too many scenes of fishing for my taste, but I am still glad I watched it.
