Actually, I believe "mean" is the middle term in a series. It's usually close to the average, but sometimes it can be significantly different. For instance, in the series "1,1,1,1,16" the mean is 1 but the average is 4

Nope...you've got it backwards.
"Mean" = average = arithmetic mean
"Median" = a value among a series where there would be equal number of values above and below

Hehe...guys this is SI. We're suppose to know this like the back of our hands. I've signed all of us up for Statistics 101. ;-)
