The comments I read about AI advances often question how useful they will be to society, and of course people mention job losses (for example comments on the recent essay on AI in WaPo). I think people often miss the point of AI, which is not to be a great boon to human beings in general, it is to make a lot of money for a small section of society. I'm not ignoring that AI is becoming a really useful tool in some fields like some parts of science and medicine, but I don't think that this is what is motivating the AI companies.
