I agree that things are getting complicated under the hood. I can't change the oil in my car (not that I would do it if I could) because it's difficult to get to the oil filter and you need a special tool. But I think that cars are probably getting better in reliability (or at least Honda/Acura - the only cars I have experience with - maybe this is an exception). However, warranties on used cars is still a good idea.
