Why did the Internet's popularity run CompuServe and Prodigy into the ground, while not laying a glove on AOL.

The heated competition from ISPs goes back to the query that started this thread back in 1996. By your reasoning, there's no way AOL should have made it this far.

I think the appeal of AOL to mass market consumers is broader and more durable than you realize. Whatever the explanation, it needs to be the first item on your list. Otherwise, you are trying to figure out who will win the NBA title by scrutinizing the long and detailed list of each team's reserves. I applaud your work ethic. But it is a pointless exercise. I'll take all the money by knowing that you only have to answer one question if know what to ask: Is Michael Jordan still playing for the Bulls.
