It was an interesting day in southwestern BC yesterday.

When I woke up with sore eyes I knew that the smoke had moved back in, it turned out mostly from a fire on the Olympic Peninsula about 75km west of Seattle.

Then I started seeing reports of an ash fall in Victoria, about 100 km SW of Vancouver.

Then there were reports that the ash was from Mt. St. Helens(!).

Eventually everything got straightened out. The ash fall in Victoria was actually from a fire to their north.

Meanwhile, there were (true) reports that extremely strong winds around Mt. St. Helens were whipping up clouds of ash from the eruption in 1980, prompting false rumours that it was erupting again (in spite of no seismic or any other indicators of a coming eruption).

The winds have shifted and the smoke has mostly cleared out around Vancouver and Victoria today.

I still have a jar filled with ash from the eruption. A few months after it happened, I was driving back north from competing from disc sports tournaments in California when I got pulled over for going 62 mph right when the I-5 is closest to the volcano. The speed limit then was 55 mph and you could usually get away with 62, but I guess the cop was bored. He was nice enough to use his boot to kick some hardened ash by the side of the road to loosen it so I could collect some. And no, I never paid the ticket, nor my only other speeding ticket which was awarded to me in Oregon.
