As best as I can determine Ascend's philosophy is to pay whatever it takes to get an edge and keep way ahead of those who'd nip at their heels.

I assume the cost of NetStar was weighed against the cost of not acquiring the technology in terms of not having a hot product RIGHT NOW vs someone else getting it and doing damage to Ascend's role of leader. That cost in my mind would be incalculable but would have a heavy effect on the stock in very little time.

Going back to MRVC, can they bring this product to market soon enough so as to ace out others, notably a Cisco? And if they do make inroads on the Ciscos wouldn't that support the theory that IP switches will indeed take over? I've heard that CSCO is really rethinking things and will be taking a defensive posture - I wouldn't count on them not adapting to a new market reality if it becomes one, as MSFT has with the Internet, but will they not suffer some real damage in the process? Any views on that?
