Data General Invests in SCO's UnixWare System for 64-Bit UNIX
February 25, 1998
WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE). --
Joins Compaq, ICL, and Unisys in Effort to Establish
Industry-Standard UNIX System
Data General announced today that the company, along with Compaq, ICL, and Unisys, is making a
significant investment in SCO's UnixWare operating system for delivery of a 64-bit version to run on
Intel's IA 64 Merced processors. In addition, Data General will contribute its highly rated NUMA and
high availability technologies to the development of the UnixWare operating system.
"Data General's investment in UnixWare underscores our belief that the best approach for UNIX on
64-bit Merced is one that provides an industry standard operating system from a hardware
independent vendor focused only on software," said Linda Mentzer, vice president of the UNIX
Business Unit at Data General. "This approach will deliver a scalable, reliable, and highly available
operating system to support users' mission critical applications. It also provides the commodity pricing
model of volume distribution which enables a wide range of applications availability and tremendous
cost savings to ISVs. "
At the same time, Data General will continue to offer its industry-leading DG/UX(r) operating system
for the IA 32 architecture even beyond the availability of Merced processors. Data General recently
announced a number of enhancements to DG/UX, enabling it to power its third-generation AViiON(r)
NUMA servers, code-named Audubon 2, with support for 64 Intel Deschutes processors, 64 GB of
memory, and 400 TB of CLARiiON(r) Fibre Channel storage.
DG/UX is Data General's UNIX based operating system, widely recognized for its advanced data
center capabilities including performance, scalability, high availability, clustering, systems
management, and security. DG/UX has been available since the introduction of AViiON servers in
1989 with built-in support for symmetric multiprocessing.
AViiON NUMA Servers
Data General has sold more than 300 first- and second-generation NUMA servers. First generation
16- and 32-processor AViiON NUMA systems, based on the Motorola 88K chip, started shipping in
January of 1996. Second-generation NUMA systems, based on Intel Pentium Pro processors, started
shipping in June of 1997.
